Field Hockey Stays Perfect with Shutout of Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Worcester State University field hockey team ran its season-opening win streak to four on Saturday afternoon, defeating Mount Holyoke College 5-0 in non-conference action at the Turf & Track Complex.

With the win, Worcester State stays perfect at 4-0, while the Lyons drop to 1-2.

Fresh off a hat trick against Wellesley, on Thursday, senior Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) opened the scoring for Worcester State on Saturday, popping home her fourth goal of the season 8:45 into the opening quarter. Classmate Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.) scored her first goal of the game as the clock was winding down in the quarter to give the visitors a 2-0 lead after one. Freshman Carly Duff (Warren, Mass.) and senior Katelyn Santos (Acushnet, Mass.) were credited with assists on the Antonelli goal.

Antonelli added another tally midway through the second quarter to extend Worcester State's lead to three heading into the half. Sophia Monopoli (Worcester, Mass.) earned an assist on the goal.

A penalty stroke goal four and a half minutes into the second half gave Antonelli the natural hat trick, as she lifted one into the top left corner of the net. Defender Sarah Bjorn (Holden, Mass.) capped Worcester State's offense on the day with her first goal as a Lancer in the closing minutes of the third quarter, with Duff and Cassidy Windler (Holden, Mass.) recording assists.

Sophomore Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) made five saves to earn her fourth win of the season. She was replaced with just inside eight minutes to play by Kacy Florence (Methuen, Mass.), who preserved the Lancer shutout.

The Lancers will return to action on the road Thursday evening with a non-conference matchup against Springfield College, slated for a 6 p.m. start.
