Field Hockey Knocks Off Fitchburg State

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University field hockey team won its third consecutive game on Saturday afternoon, defeating Fitchburg State University 4-1 in Little East Conference action at Coughlin Field.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 9-2 overall this season and a perfect 5-0 in the LEC. Fitchburg State drops to 1-11 and 0-6 in the conference.

The Lancers wasted little time getting on the board to start the day, as senior Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.) found the back of the net off a penalty corner just 1:19 into the contest to give Worcester State a 1-0 lead. Alexa Bobbin (Charlestown, R.I.) and Cassidy Windler (Holden, Mass.) were credited with assists on the opening tally.

Minutes later, senior Sophia Monopoli (Worcester, Mass.) stretched Worcester State's lead to 2-0 as she scored a goal off a rebound at the 5:30 mark. The score would remain 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.

A Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) goal with just four seconds remaining in the first half extended Worcester State's lead to 3-0. Antonelli earned an assist on the goal.

Just shy of four minutes into the third quarter, a shot of the stick of Hopkins redirected into the net off a Fitchburg State defender to give Worcester State a 4-0 lead.

With 2:10 remaining in the contest, Falcon sophomore Sarah Craig (Winchendon, Mass.) scored a goal off a rebound to end the Worcester State shutout, but the comeback bid would fall far too short as the Lancers earned the 4-1 victory.

Sophomore Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) got the victory in goal for the host Lancers, and was not forced to make a save in her 54 minutes of action. Falcon freshman Colleen Lamprey (Cherry Valley, Mass.) turned aside eight shots in the loss.

Worcester State held a 23-3 advantage in shots in the contest, with each of Fitchburg's shots coming in the fourth quarter. Worcester State also led the penalty corner count by a margin of 12-2.

The Lancers will return to action on Wednesday night for a Little East contest against Southern Maine. Fitchburg State is off until Thursday, when they host Westfield State at 7:30 p.m.
