Field Hockey Handles Southern Maine

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University field hockey grabbed a 4-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Wednesday evening in Little East Conference action at Coughlin Field.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 10-2 overall on the season and stay perfect at 6-0 in the LEC. Southern Maine drops to 6-7 and 4-2 in the LEC.

Senior Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.) wasted no time getting the Lancers on the board in the opening quarter, finding the back of the net just 3:09 into the contest. The senior walked down the left wing and lifted a ball past Husky goalkeeper Lindsay Pych for the game's opening goal.

Southern Maine had a quick response less than three minutes later, as Mikayla Bourassa scored her first goal of the season off of a penalty corner at the 5:57 mark to put the Huskies on the board. Maggie Redman assisted on Bourassa's tally.

Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) put the Lancers in the lead for good just under four minutes into the second quarter, as she and Antonelli executed a perfect 2-on-1 to put the Lancers ahead by a score. Five and a half minutes later, Hopkins scored her second goal of the game, extending Worcester State's lead to 3-1.

Antonelli batted a Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) feed out of mid-air late in the second quarter for her second goal of the game to push Worcester's advantage to 4-1 entering halftime.

Southern Maine got one back midway through the third quarter when sophomore Samantha Ellis netted her seventh goal of the season, but the goal would be the only offense the Huskies or Lancers would be able to mount the rest of the way and Worcester State would close out a 4-2 win.

Worcester State goalkeeper Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up her 10th win of the season in net, making three saves in net for the Lancers. Pych turned aside two shots in the defeat.

Worcester State will return to action for a Saturday morning contest at Framingham State at 11 a.m. Southern Maine will be in action the same day with a 12 p.m. start at home.
