Field Hockey Stopped Short by WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. - A furious fourth quarter comeback effort fell just short for the Worcester State University field hockey team on Thursday afternoon, as the Lancers fell 2-1 to WPI in non-conference action at Coughlin Field.

With the loss, Worcester State's six-game winning streak comes to a close, and the Lancers fall to 12-3 on the season. The Engineers remain perfect at 13-0.

Abby O'Sullivan and Carly Cidado each scored first quarter goals to leave Worcester State chasing the play right from the jump. The Lancers held a shot advantage of 8-6 in the opening half, but couldn't find the back of the net, and the teams went to the break with the Engineers leading 2-0.

The third quarter resembled a chess match, as neither team even recorded a shot and the game went to the fourth with the same 2-0 score. In the fourth, Worcester State finally broke through with 10:58 to play as sophomore Lexie Panagiotopoulos (Lowell, Mass.) took an Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.) feed and buried her second goal of the season off the left post and in.

Worcester State continued to pour on the pressure in the quarter, but were unable to find an equalizer. The Lancers outshot WPI 7-1 in the period, but the Engineers would end up escaping with a 2-1 victory.

Jess Hopkins made five saves in net for the Lancers in the losing effort.

Worcester State will be back in action on Saturday for its Senior Day game against Eastern Connecticut State. The contest will get underway at 11 a.m.
