Lancers Fall to Engineers in Tuesday NIght Battle

Worcester, MA- After scoring their first goals of the season last Saturday at Springfield College the Worcester State Field Hockey team (0-4) return to Coughlin Field to host the WPI Engineers in their Tuesday night battle of Worcester. The Lancers are primed for their first win of the season after narrowly dropping their contest to Springfield.

Final

Worcester State: 0

WPI: 4

How it Happened:

The game started off at a steady pace for the first quarter as both teams worked the ball from end to end in a bid to find the first offensive of the game. While both teams would have solid looks in the first quarter the opening 15 minutes would end with four corner attempts for the Engineers and two saves for senior Madison Ferrara (Somerset, MA) but the score would sit at 0-0 as both teams were able to apply lots of pressure in each other ends, however stout defense from both sides kept the balls out the net. The second quarter consisted of two WPI scores. The first came early in the quarter on a quick cut pass to Leah Uglevich after Eliza Dutson carried the ball down the right side, finding the space to send the ball across the frame for a touch by Uglevich that would see the ball sail behind the defense into the cage. The second for WPI would come off a perfectly executed corner play that would see Emily Sollecito insert to Eve Martineau who go hammer it hard past Ferraro.

The third quarter would consist of three corners for WPI and 7 saves by Lancers Ferrera as the offensive began to assert itself for Engineers. Despite the efforts put in by Worcester State defense WPI would score another goal to extend the lead to 3-0 after a scrum in the middle of the circle would find Arie Lang for her first goal of the season. In the fourth, and final quarter,  Ferrara would have a block party with an astonishing 9 shots saved. However penalties would come back to haunt the Lancers allowing 8 corners for WPI which would ultimately lead to the goal that would put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter at 4-0 as a save would bounce back into the middle of the circle for Abbey Powers to collect and send towards teammate Sophie Papamechail to tuck into the gap for the goal.

Ferrera would close out the game with 18 saves on the night while senior Natalya Morin (Barre, MA) would lead the Lancers with 1 shot on goal.
