Alexa Carlson stepped down from her head coaching role with the Worcester State field hockey team in the summer of 2021 and became an assistant coach with the program.

In May of 2017, the Worcester State University Athletic Department named Carlson the head field hockey coach, following a brief stint as the interim head coach during the 2016 season.

In 2019, she led the Lancers to their first ever Little East Conference championship and garnered her third LEC Coach of the Year honor in four years.

In her first two years at the helm, Carlson earned back-to-back LEC Coach of the Year accolades as she helped the program win consecutive MASCAC field hockey regular season championships, and its first-ever LEC regular season championship this past season. She helped the Lancers to 13 victories in 2016, and a program-record 15 wins in 2017. She currently holds an overall record of 28-10 (.737).

In 2016 she coached the LEC Rookie of the Year, Olivia Antonelli. In 2018, under Carlson’s guidance, Michaila Parent and Hayley Sutherland earned LEC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year accolades, respectively, and both were named to the Synapse All-American teams. Parent earned the program’s first NFHCA All-American laurels, and also was tabbed the 2017 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Scholar. The entire team was recognized by the organization the past two years for holding a team GPA of a 3.30 or higher during the fall semester.  

Carlson’s first year with the program was in 2015 as an assistant coach where she helped lead the Lancers to a winning record.

Prior to her coaching career at Worcester State, Carlson was an assistant field hockey coach at Elms College where she was instrumental in helping lead the program from a winless season to a team that competed for the conference championship.

Carlson also brings four years of playing experience to the field, as she was a four-year standout member of the Springfield College field hockey team.

Carlson, a native of New Milford, Connecticut, holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health Education and also a Master’s of Education in Athletic Administration from Springfield College. She currently resides in Holden, Mass. with her husband Aaron and is a Physical Education Teacher.
