Worcester State 69, Regis 62
Weston, MA --- Worcester State College (3-2) opened the game with a 10-0 run on Regis College (2-3). The Lancers would hold off Regis long enough to earn a 69-62 victory Saturday night.
Worcester State led by as many as 12 at 8:58 (23-11) and ended the period with their largest lead at 36-23. The Pride got only as close as six with 6:13 remaining on a pair of free throws by Jesse Vega (Pawtucket, RI), but WSC went on a 13-5 run to close the stanza.
The Lancers built up a pair of 15-plus point leads in the second half only to see the Pride threaten each time. Up 41-26 after a Ryan Testagrossa (Athol, MA) early on in the frame, Regis went on a 15-5 spurt to trail 46-41 with 13:42 left. WSC outscored Regis 13-2 over the next five minutes to go up 59-43.
With Worcester State up 59-45 at 7:19 Regis outscored the Blue
and Gold 12-4 to bring the lead to six (63-57) with 2:36 left in
regulation. WSC went on a 6-2 push to close out the game before
Ta'Keame Gomes (Cambridge, MA) hit a trey in the
waning seconds of the game, but it was too late.
Maurice Horton (Detroit, MI) led all Worcester
State scorers with 16 points in 24 minutes. Horton got into foul
trouble early in the second period.
He finished the night 5-of-10 (.500) from the field, snatched nine
rebounds, and went 5-of-7 (.714) from the free throw line.
With Horton on the bench several other Lancer teammates stepped
up. One of those players was Dave Douillette
(Bridgewater, MA) who finished with 13 points and nine
rebounds.
Also contributing for Worcester State was Pat
Hamilton (Templeton, MA), who finished with 10 points, and
nine rebounds. Hamilton was 6-of-6 from the free throw line on the
night.
Worcester State shot a consistent 62 percent from the free throw
line on the night. In the first period Worcester State shot better
than 54 percent from the floor.
In comparison, the Lancers held Regis to 21 percent shooting
(7-of-21) from the floor.
Regis' Derrik Neal (Boston, MA) would finish with a team-high 16
points. Vega finished his night with 15 points and seven rebounds,
for the Pride.
Regis actually outscored Worcester State in the second half. The
Regis bench contributed 37 points during the game. Its bench scored
24 of Regis’ 39 second-half points.
The Lancers will host the UMass Dartmouth Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 7 PM.
Regis College will travel to nearby Newbury College on the same day
for a 7 PM tip-off.
