Men's Basketball Takes Hockenbury Consolation In Win Over UMaine Augusta

Northfield, VT --- Freshman Jeremy Bacon (Milford, MA) netted a game-best 18 points as he helped lead Worcester State to a 96-56 victory over UMaine Augusta in the consolation game of the Hockenbury Classic this afternoon at Norwich University.

Worcester State, who snapped an eight-game losing streak dating back to last season's MASCAC quarterfinal setback against Salem State, improve to 1-7 on the campaign. The Moose fall to 1-13 with the loss.

Freshman Paul Brooks (Arlington, MA) notched his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards while junior Brendan Rios (Easthampton, MA) chipped in with 14 points and seven caroms – including a trio of three pointers.

Senior Dane Jobst (Athol, MA) pitched in with 14 points and five helpers as junior Jake Ratcliffe (Northbridge, MA) was a spark off the bench with 12 points in 14 minutes of action.

For his efforts in today's victory, Ratcliffe was honored on the All-Tournament Team.

UMaine Augusta was paced by junior Brandon Rogers (Turlock, CA) who finished with team-highs of 13 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two blocks.

Classmate Jesse Smith (Troy, NY) tallied 11 points while freshman Caleb McGuire (Whitefield, ME) and sophomore Keith Chelsey (Clinton, ME) both finished with 10 points apiece. McGuire also grabbed nine caroms for the Moose in the defeat.

The Lancers nursed the early 13-8 advantage with 12:58 left in the first half before the offense exploded with a 26-6 run to go up 39-14, six minutes later.

It was an overall team effort in the spurt as seven different players contributed at least two points in the run and helped WSU go 9-for-16 from the floor.

The Blue and Gold finished the stanza with the 57-28 lead at the intermission.  Ratcliffe and Bacon both chipped in with 10 points each at the break.

Worcester State maintained their margin the rest of the way as the UMaine Augusta never got back into the game. WSU outscored the Moose, 39-28 in the final stanza.

The Lancers finished the contest hitting 51 percent of their shots which included a 6-for-18 effort from beyond the arc (33 percent). WSU also led in rebounds (55-37), points in the paint (52-26), second chance points (17-6) and fast break points (25-15).
