Men's Basketball Completes Season Sweep of Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Junior Shaun McCarthy (Oxford, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Cardoso (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) each scored 17 points as the Worcester State University men's basketball team defeated Framingham State 81-72 Wednesday night in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at the Athletic Center.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 11-10 overall on the season, and up to 4-4 in conference play. Framingham State falls to 5-15 and also 4-4 in the MASCAC.

After Framingham State led for the better part of the first half, Worcester State closed the period on a 12-6 run to take a 37-31 lead into the locker room. Juniors Tyler Dion (Barre, Mass.) and Frantz Francois (Boston, Mass.) each recorded triples in the final minutes of the half to lead the Lancers into the break with the six-point advantage.

A 3-pointer from Cal Howes (Maynard, Mass.) and lay-in from Erik Bjorn (Holden, Mass.) gave the Lancers an 11-point edge just over a minute into the second half. An old-fashion 3-point play at the 10:26 mark of the half gave the Lancers their largest lead of the evening at 56-44, and Worcester State wouldn't look back from there, holding on down the stretch for the win.

McCarthy finished with the game's lone double-double, adding 13 rebounds to go along with his 17 points. Francois finished the evening with 12 points and eight rebounds for the Lancers off the bench, while Dion put home 11 points. Manny Payton scored 30 points for Framingham State, but the big outing was not enough to get the hosts over the edge.

Next up for Worcester State, they will travel to MCLA for a Saturday matinee against the Trailblazers. Tip-off from North Adams is set for 3 p.m.
