SUTTON, Mass. – The reigning Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Champions, Salem State, earned their second consecutive title Tuesday (Apr. 11) afternoon at the Blackstone National Golf Course.
Salem State had three golfers in the top-5 to lead the Vikings to a team score total of 322 (+34). Worcester State recorded a team total of 327 (+39), while Westfield State tallied 332 (+44) strokes. MCLA had three competitors and did not score in the team category.
Westfield State's junior Mike Sarkis (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) won the individual title as he carded a 75 (+3) to win medalist honors.
"Spring golf in New England is always a wild card," commented head coach Mark Gurski. "Many of the players didn't have much of a chance to get out before the tournament, but they were able to fully enjoy the weather, the course and their fellow competitors' company on a great day."
Salem State's Chad Alibozek (Adams, Mass.) edged Worcester State's Mike Jezierski (Thompson, Conn.) for second place, carding a 77 (+5). Jezierski carded a 78 (+6), taking third place in the MASCAC tournament. Salem State's Nick Stone (Londonderry, N.H.) grabbed fourth place with an 80 (+8) while Salem's Ryan Swart (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Worcester's Steven Ferraro (Leicester, Mass.) tied for fifth with 81 (+9) strokes.
Gurski was pleased with his team's overall performance. "We saw some great scoring from all the players and I couldn't be happier with the way the event unfolded."
Anthony Bement (Attleboro, Mass.), Eddie Peladeau (Douglas, Mass.), Luke Robare (E. Longmeadow, Mass.), and Vincenzo Palazzi (Feeding Hills, Mass.) also represented Worcester State at the par-72 course. Bement tagged seventh place with an 83, while Peladeau tied for 10th with 85 strokes. Robare came in at 14th place, while Palazzi placed 16th individually.
While the Lancers captured second in the MASCAC's, they earned fourth place out of eight teams at the Rich Korzec Invitational. Western New England won the invitational with a team total of 307. Salem State secured second while Rhode Island College came in third. Fourth place was Worcester State, and Westfield State followed with fifth. Nichols College, Wentworth, and MCLA wrapped up the team scoring with sixth, seventh, and eighth places, respectively. Bentley also took part in the invitational, as they had six golfers compete individually.
The Lancers return to the course on Friday as they attend the RIC Anchormen Invitational, which has been rescheduled from April 1. They then will wrap up their spring season Apr. 22-23 when they travel to Cranston, R.I. for the Johnson & Wales Wildcats Spring Invitational.
