Martin Lifts Ice Hockey Past UMass Dartmouth, 2-1

New Bedford, MA --- Senior Curtis Martin (Okotoks, Alberta/San Diego Gulls) scored the final two goals of the contest to help lift Worcester State over the UMass Dartmouth men's ice hockey team, 2-1, in a MASCAC men's ice hockey match-up this afternoon at the Hetland Arena.

The Corsairs (2-9-2, 2-5 MASCAC) dropped their fourth consecutive league game, while the Lancers (6-6-1, 1-5-1 MASCAC) earned their first victory over a conference opponent.

With 4:11 remaining in regulation and the score locked at one goal a piece, Martin put home the game-winning marker for Worcester State off assists from junior classmates Cody Osburn (Sacramento, CA/Fresno Monsters) and Stephen Rock (Tulsa, OK/Idaho Jr. Steelheads).

Martin knotted the score at 1-1 back in the second frame when he beat UMass Dartmouth first-year goaltender JJ Solloway (Derry, NH/Northern Cyclones) during a power play opportunity. Rock also had a hand in that goal along with freshman Alex Dewitz (Oronoco, MI/Helena Bighorns) at the 7:28 mark.

The lone tally for the Corsairs came at the 4:30 mark in the opening stanza when freshman Tanner Zacharewicz (Ludlow, MA/Trinity-Pawling) beat the WSU gaolie for his third strike of the campaign.

Sophomore Mike Restuccia (Malden, MA/Winchedon) and senior Nate Dupere (Fall River, MA/Hebron Academy) were awarded assists on the play.

UMass Dartmouth was presented with a golden scoring opportunity when junior Shaun Walters (Plymouth, MI/Rochester Ice Hawks) was awarded a penalty shot in the second period, however, he was turned aside by Worcester State second-year goaltender Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, MA/Long Beach Bombers).

Tecci recorded 33 saves and earned his third win in net this season, while Solloway turned away 33 attempts in the loss for the Corsairs.

The Lancers held the slim 35-34 edge in shots on goal while each team was able to capitalize once with the man advantage as WSU had five chances and UMD four power-plays. Neither team committed a penalty in the final stanza.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Framingham State for a 7:20 PM MASCAC matchup, while Worcester State hosts conference opponent Framingham State next Saturday with the puck dropping at 4:45 PM.
