Ice Hockey Drops 5-1 Decision To Westfield State

Westfield, MA --- Westfield State junior teamates TJ Powers (East Greenwich, RI/Fresno Monsters) and Dan Loughlin (Methuen, MA/New England Stars) scored two goals apiece to help lead the Owls to a 5-1 victory over Worcester State in MASCAC men's ice hockey action this evening.

The Owls improved to 7-4 in the MASCAC and 8-10 overall while the Lancers fall to 3-7-1 in conference play and 7-8-1 on the campaign.

Loughlin opened the scoring at the 8:49 mark of the opening frame on a successful penalty shot after being hooked from behind on a shorthanded breakaway.

Worcester State answered late in the first period when freshman Michael Dery (Grand Rapids, MI/Ogden Mustangs) lit the lamp at the 16:16 mark to tie the score at 1-1.

Powers netted the eventual game-winning marker 3:33 into the second stanza before he assisted on Westfield State's third goal, a one-timer from the right circle from sophomore Kyllian Kirkwood (Copper Cliff, ON/Wellington Dukes) just 31 ticks into the final period for the 3-1 edge.

Powers then notched his second goal at the 4:02 mark and Loughlin capped the scoring on a shorthanded goal with 3:05 remaining in the game for the 5-1 tally.

The Blue and Gold outshot the Owls, 36-27, but were unable to capitalize on six power play chances while Westfield State also came up empty on their two opportunities with the man advantage.

Westfield State senior goalie Eddie Davey (Orangeville, ON/Abitibi Eskimos) finished with 35 saves running his record to 7-4 while his counterpart, sophomore Drew Case (Plano, TX/Northern Cyclones), recorded 22 stops and fell to 3-3 on the season.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Worcester State returns home to face-off with Salem State when the puck drops at 4:45 PM and Westfield State remains at home with a 5:35 PM contest against Plymouth State.
