Crosstown Assumption Rival Races Past Ice Hockey, 6-3

Worcester, MA --- Assumption senior Kyle Zobler (Millbury, MA/New Hampton) registered a pair of goals and added an assist to help propel the Greyhounds past Worcester State, 6-3, in non-conference men's ice hockey action this evening at Buffone Arena.

The Lancers (8-10-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 margin with just 5:48 off the clock in the opening frame.

Senior Derek Serbon (Crown Point, IN/Tulsa Rampage) lit the lamp at the 2:28 mark before freshman Alex DeWitz (Oronoco, MN/Helena Bighorns) sounded the siren to tie senior Curtis Martin (Okotoks, Alberta/San Diego Gulls) for the team lead with eight tallies on the season.

Martin earned his fourth assist of the season on the marker while junior Andrew Bates (Marblehead, MA / Boston Jr. Bulldogs) chipped in on Serbon's score.

Assumption (4-17-2) got on the board just before the first stanza came to a close when Zobler netted a power play goal at the 18:30 mark to shift momentum in favor of the hosts.

The Greyhounds used three consecutive second period goals to jump out to a 4-2 advantage when the horn sounded.

Sophomore Brandon Bete (Greenfield, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon) found the back of the net at the 11:33 mark to tie the contest at 2-2.

Freshman classmates Ryan Gomez (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Paul Amarone (Hamden, CT/Trinity Pauling) then potted scores just 92 ticks apart at 16:06 and 17:38, respectively, for the two-goal advantage.

Assumption added two early third period goals from freshman Kevin Murphy (Kearsarge, NH/Kennett) just 31 seconds into the frame and Zobler recorded his second goal at the 3:31 mark for a commanding 6-2 cushion.

Junior Nathan Stanley (Meriden, ID/Idaho Jr. Steelheads) added a late power play goal at 13:25 for the final tally. Stanley now stands just one point shy of 50 for his career.

Both teams fired 31 pucks on net and the Greyhounds cashed in on 2-of-8 chances with the man-advantage and the Blue and Gold recorded one goal on three power play opportunities.

Assumption freshman goaltender Nick Commesso (Marshfield, MA/Governors Academy) turned aside 28 shots to improve his record to 2-4-1 for the season.

WSU sophomore goalie Drew Case (Plano, TX/Northern Cyclones) made 18 saves and fell to 3-4 before being relieved by freshman Joe MacConnell (Fairview Heights, IL/Osoyoos Coyotes) who stopped seven pucks over the final 19:09 of game action.

Both squads return to action Thursday night as Worcester State travels to Fitchburg State where the puck drops at 7 PM and Assumption ventures north to Southern New Hampshire with face-off scheduled for 7:35 PM.
