Stanley Leads Ice Hockey In Comeback 5-3 Win Over Assumption

Worcester, MA --- Senior Nathan Stanley (Meridian, ID/Idaho Jr Steeleheads) netted two third period goals to help propel Worcester State in a 5-3 comeback win over crosstown rival Assumption in non-league ice hockey action this evening at the Buffone Arena.

Trailing 3-2 entering the third, Stanley notched the game-tying tally at the 3:16 mark off a tip-in to knot up the score before Ryan Menard (Ashland, MA/Tampa Bay Juniors) registered the game-winning tally 3½ minutes later with some help by Stanley and senior Vinny Bohn (Spring Hill, FL/El Paso Rhinos) on the play.

With 6:45 remaining in regulation, Stanley helped give the Lancers a two-goal advantage off of a power play as Bohn and freshman Alex Pommerville (Macedon, NY/Salt Lake City Moose) both had a hand in the goal.

The Greyhounds (8-15) had a chance late to get back into the game when the hosts pulled their goalie, but freshman Tyler Fallica (Coram, NY/Ogden Mustangs) stepped up to the challenge and turned aside all four shots he saw on net.

Assumption freshman Brian Farrell (Island Park, NY/W. Boca) and senior Brannen Shaw (Presque Isle, ME/Brewster Academy) originally helped the home team take over the 2-0 advantage.

The Lancers (5-14-2), however, countered when Pommerville scored 49 seconds after Shaw's power play marker and senior Andrew Bates (Marblehead, MA/Boston Jr Bruins) scooped in the equalizer with five ticks remaining in the frame.

Shaw lit the lamp just 1:22 into the second period to notch his seventh of the campaign and give the Greyhounds the 3-2 edge.

The second period score remained the same as the visitors outshot their opponents 24-9 in the final 14 minutes of the frame. The momentum carried over into the third as Menard broke a scoreless drought that lasted over 21 minutes to knot up the score early on in the third period.

Fallica ended the contest with 35 saves while junior Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, CT/Glastonbury HS) stopped 53.

The Lancers were 2-for-5 on power plays while Shaw potted both of Assumptions chances with the extra man advantage as WSU also led in shots, 58-38.

Stanley now leads the club with nine goals on the season which is among the top 15 in the MASCAC.

Worcester State continues with a 6 PM road matchup against Plymouth State while Assumption makes the trek to St. Michaels for a 7 PM visit in the semifinals of the Northeast 10 Championship.
