Worcester State Earns Fifth Seed in MASCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament

The Worcester State University men's ice hockey team earned the No. 5 seed in the 2017 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) tournament after concluding the regular season at 9-13-3 and 6-10-2 in the conference Tuesday evening.

 

The men's ice hockey tournament will begin on Saturday (Feb. 25) with the quarterfinal round. The No. 3 seeded UMass Dartmouth will host No. 6 Westfield State, while the Lancers will travel to the No. 4 seeded Fitchburg State.

 

Top seeded Plymouth State will host the winner of Fitchburg/Worcester, while the second seeded Salem State will host the winner of UMass Dartmouth/Westfield in the semifinals on Tuesday (Feb. 28). The tournament will wrap up on Saturday (Mar. 4) with the championship game at the highest remaining seed.

 

Leading the Lancers on the offense this season was senior forward Alex DeWitz (Oronoco, Minn.) with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists). Kyle Griffin (Marlboro, Mass.) picked up a team-high nine goals and five assists, while Mitchell Purdie (Cavan, Ont.) and Mike Moran (Milford, Mass.) collected 13 points apiece.

 

Leading the team on the defense were senior captain Jim LeNoir (Exton, Pa.) and Alex Pommerville (Macedon, N.Y.) who picked up nine and seven points, respectively, throughout the regular season.

 

In his first year with the team, Josh Reinstein (Woodland Hills, Calif.) was solid between the pipes for Worcester State with a goals against average of 2.44 and .919 save percentage, both which were top-4 in the league.
