Ice Hockey Shuts Out Westfield State

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's ice hockey team picked up a win in conference play by a score of 2-0 Saturday against the Westfield State Owls at the Worcester Ice Center.

With the win, the Lancers move to 5-2 (3-1 in MASCAC play). The Owls fall to 3-2-1 (2-1 in MASCAC).

The two teams were evenly matched in the first quarter. The Lancers outshot Westfield State 7-6, but neither team could find the back of the net. Lancers' keeper Aaron Callan (South, Lyon, Mich.) made a pair of impressive glove saves to hold back the Owls.

Worcester State peppered shots at the Owls in the second period, but still could not break through and score. The Lancers put together 15 shots in the second to Westfield State's five, but the score remained 0-0.

The Lancers opened up the scoring quickly in the third period, scoring twice in the first two minutes. Mike Moran (Milford, Mass.) scored the first goal, with Henry Bruckner (Franklin, Mass.) and Mitch Purdie (Peterborough, Ontario) picking up assists. Just 35 seconds later, Will Ahearn (Charlestown, Mass.) scored again for the Lancers from right in front of the net. Tim Drevitch (Oxford, N.J.) and Sean Gavin (Galena, Ohio) earned assists.

Worcester State stymied the Owls 5-on-3 opportunity with six minutes left and held on to win the game.

Callan saved 16 shots for the Lancers while earning the win. Goalkeeper Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Quebec) of Westfield State picked up 32 saves despite the loss.

Up next for the Lancers is a road game as they travel to UMass Dartmouth Thursday, November 29. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. The Owls will host Anna Maria on Tuesday, November 20 starting at 7:35 p.m.
