Men's Ice Hockey Bested by Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Worcester State University men's ice hockey team suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to Saint Anselm College at Sullivan Arena.

With the result, both teams move to 1-1-0 on the young season.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first period, but Saint Anselm broke the ice with the game's first goal just 19 seconds into the second to take a 1-0 lead.

Worcester State fought back to tie to the game however, as sophomore Will Ahearn (Charlestown, Mass.) connected for his first goal of the season off a two-on-one with Kevin Drevitch (Oxford, N.J.) at the 11:52 mark of the second period. The Hawks, however, responded just under a minute later, retaking the lead on a Chris LeMay goal.

After the Hawks extended their lead to 3-1 early in the third period, Nick Pennucci (Worcester, Mass.) got one back for the Lancers with his second goal in as many games, but that would be the end of the Worcester's offense on the afternoon. The Hawks put the final nail in the coffin with under two minutes to go to close out the victory.

In goal, sophomore Ryan Hoff (Brockton, Mass.) took his first loss of the season, despite turning aside 25 shots.

Next up for the Lancers, they'll continue their road trip with the MASCAC opener against Westfield State on Tuesday. Puck drop is slated for 7:35 p.m.
