Men's Ice Hockey Snaps Skid with Victory over Stonehill

FOXBORO, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's ice hockey team snapped a five-game winless streak on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over Stonehill College in non-conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center.

With the win, Worcester State ends the 2019 calendar year with a record of 5-5-1. The Skyhawks drop to 1-7-1.

Worcester State got on the board first just over eight minutes into the first period, as freshman Petr Staif (Zruc-Senec, Czech Republic) knocked in a Nick Pennucci (Worcester, Mass.) feed at the back post for his second goal of the season. Sophomore Evan Schieber (Macon, Ga.) was credited with a secondary assist on the goal.

Late in the second, Worcester State extended its lead to 2-0 when senior Colin Whitt (Southlake, Texas) scored his first of the season. On an attempted Stonehill clear, captain Matthew Manning (Novi, Mich.) intercepted a pass and found Whitt at the left point. The senior wristed one toward the cage that had eyes and found the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal.

Stonehill would score 8:17 into the third, but couldn't find the equalizer as the Lancers closed out the victory.

Goaltender Josh Reinstein (Woodland Hills, Calif.) had his strongest outing of the season in net to earn his first victory of the year. The senior made 32 saves on 33 chances to move to 1-2-0 on the season.

Worcester State will return to the ice on January 7 when they travel to Connecticut College. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
