Westfield, MA --- Second-year net-minder Nick Zucco (Ludlow, MA) has been tabbed The Corvias Co-ECAC Division III New England Defensive Men's Soccer Player of The Week for his efforts during a 1-0-1 week for the Lancers.
Zucco, who was also named Co-MASCAC Player of the Week, registered a 0.44 goals against average, turning aside 14 of 15 shots he faced over his two starts between the pipes this past week for Worcester State. He recorded eight saves in a 1-0 overtime shutout against Elms on Tuesday while stopping seven shots in a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Bridgewater State Saturday.
On the campaign, Zucco has led the Blue and Gold to an undefeated league slate of 2-0-1 and an overall mark of 4-2-4. In addition to blanking the Blazers in overtime, he also registered consecutive shutouts against MCLA and Framingham State to open conference play.
Among keepers who have played more than 600 minutes between the pipes, Zucco is ranked second in the MASCAC in saves (56), he is tied for third in save percentage (.812) and is fourth in goals against average (1.19). Versus conference opponents the sophomore has posted the third best save percentage (.933) and goals against average (0.31) to date.
In his rookie campaign, Zucco finished the year with the eighth lowest goals allowed in program history (21) while against six league opponents he registered a 1.43 GAA to go with shutouts against Bridgewater State and a shared shutout over Fitchburg State.
Zucco shares the MASCAC weekly accolade with senior Dan Brady (Ashburnham, MA) of Westfield State while senior Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ) of WPI was also named Corvais ECAC Division III Northeast Defensive Player of the Week.
Worcester State will travel west on I-90 to face-off with Western New England College in a non-conference bout this afternoon at 4 PM before returning to MASCAC action on Saturday when they travel to Mass.-Maritime for a high-noon affair.
