Men's Soccer Blanks UMass-Boston, 1-0

Dorchester, MA --- Senior Brendan Whitson's (Auburn, MA) sixth-minute marker stood up as the match-clinching goal in a 1-0 triumph over UMass Boston in non-conference men's soccer action this afternoon.

With the win the Lancers improve their record to 6-3-4 while the Beacons slip to 9-5-1 on the campaign.

Whitson netted his sixth marker of the season when he took an flick off of a header by classmate Alex Wolfel (Unionville, CT), slipped past two defenders and fired a rocket off the UMass Boston netminder's hand for the early lead.

The two teams continued to fire attempts at both nets, but neither squad found the back of the net.

Each goalkeeper did a tremendous job of keeping the contest right where it was as the Lancers were paced by sophomore Nick Zucco (Ludlow, MA) who registered his fourth shutout of the season.

Zucco, who lowered is goals against average to 1.09 for the second-lowest mark in the MASCAC, stopped all five of the shots he looked at between the pipes. Sophomore Alfonso Rosales (Revere, MA) turned aside eight of the attempts that were on net.

The Lancers held the 20-14 edge in shots while the hosts finished with the 7-1 margin in corner kicks.

Both squads return to their respective conference schedules with games at home on Saturday. Worcester State hosts Salem State at 12 PM while UMass Boston entertains Keene State at 1 o'clock.
