Duah, Alves Propel Men's Soccer In 2-1 Trumph Over Elms

Chicopee, MA --- Senior teammates Derek Alves (Ludlow, MA) and Eugene Duah (Worcester, MA/Doherty) both netted first half goals for Worcester State as they helped pace the Lancers to a 2-1 road victory over Elms in non-conference men's soccer action this evening.

Alves helped Worcester State (3-5-1) stake the early 1-0 advantage by connecting on his second penalty kick goal of the campaign in the 26th minute following a hand ball in the box by a Blazer defender.

Duah helped the Blue and Gold strike again nearly 12 minutes later when freshman Steven Julius (Ashby, MA) sent a perfect cross on the right side of the box as Duah finished to the left corner for his first marker of the campaign.

Elms (3-5-2) broke the shutout bid with 36 seconds left in regulation as the Lancers were whistled for committing a foul in the box. Freshman Bobby Zaino (Avon, CT) took his turn and snuck the ball past junior Tim Schmidt (Southwick, MA). '

Worcester State enjoyed a 24-16 lead in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Schmidt recorded six saves as his record moves to 2-3-1 while junior Nick Pennant (St. Andrew, Jamaica) was dealt the loss for the Blazers.

Pennant played the first 45 minutes of the contest turning aside two attempts on net before being lifted in favor of classmate Ryan Harris (Brandon, MO) who stopped four shots in a scoreless second frame.

The two squads continue their respective league schedules on Saturday. Worcester State heads to Bridgewater State for a matchup at high noon as Elms entertains Mitchell at 4 o'clock.
