SALEM, Mass. — Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) netted two goals for the Lancers of Worcester State as they steamed past the Vikings of Salem State 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Lancers improve to 9-5 and 4-2 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) on the season while Salem State slips to 1-9-3 and 0-4-2 in the MASCAC.
The Lancers offense got of to a quick start as they outshot the Vikings' 9-5 in the first half, including five shots on goal by Worcester State and only one from Salem State. Vikings' goaltender Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) kept his team in it for the first 29 minutes of play as he made four saves in the half. Enos was beat by Worcester State's Brasil in the 29th minute when he received a near perfect through pass from freshmen Justin Echeverry (Methuen, Mass.) that led Brasil past the Vikings' defense where he had only Enos to beat. Brasil tucked the ball past a charging Enos to put the Lancers ahead 1-0 midway through the half.
The Vikings' had a hard time producing any offense as they only had one shot on net. Salem State did have a great scoring chance in the 31st minute when Christian Romero (Boston, Mass.) drove a free kick to the front of the Lancers net where Hatim Belmadani (Casablanca, Morocco) headed the ball right over the crossbar. This was one of the only scoring chances they had as Worcester State took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Brasil added to the Lancers lead in the 51st minute of action as George Siotis (Oxford, Mass.) set up the forward with a threaded pass through two Viking defenders. The Salem State offense had a tough time executing deep in the Worcester State end as they got off only five shots in the half. In the 68th minute, Ryan Kinsella (Wilmington, Mass.) gave his team a 3-0 lead when he carried the ball through the neutral zone and into the Salem State end, beating Enos short side. The Vikings' did cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 73rd minute as Kevin Gallo (Como, Italy) single-handedly put his team on the scoreboard. As time wound down, the lead was too much to overcome as the Lancers secured the 3-1 victory.
Enos ended the day with six saves while Lancer net minder Jason Barrett (Spencer, Mass.) stopped four Salem State shots.
Salem State will resume action on Tuesday, Oct. 25 when they travel to Portland, Maine to take on the Huskies of Southern Maine at 3:00 p.m. The Lancers will host MIT at 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 26.
