Worcester State Suffers 1-0 Loss to Daniel Webster at NCAA Tournament

AMHERST, Mass.Kevin Herrara (Metapan, El Salvador) scored the Eagle's game-winning goal with one minute remaining in the game to give Daniel Webster a 1-0 win over Worcester State in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer tournament. With the loss, the Lancers conclude their 2016 campaign at 12-7.

The Eagles kept the ball on their offensive side for the majority of the first half as they outshot the Lancers 9-4 and held an advantage in corner kicks 3-2. However, the Lancers fought back in the second half as both teams registered four shots apiece, and Worcester State gained three corner kick opportunities.

It wasn't until the 89th minute that Herrara scored the game-winner following a scramble inside the goalkeeper's box and capitalized on a pass from Aaron Esparza (Dover, N.H.), leaving Worcester State one minute on the clock to revive. In that one minute, the Lancers saw a corner kick from Noah Phelps (Attleboro, Mass.), but unfortunately, after the ball arched in front of the goal, it was cleared by the Eagle's defense to seal their victory.

Worcester State registered four shots on goal throughout the game, including two from defenders Matthew Dent (Ludlow, Mass.) and Eric Davis (Hudson, Mass.). The two others were from Mitzschael Myrthil (Clinton, Mass.) and Etjon Rapi (Worcester, Mass.).

Daniel Webster's Cooper Hall (Heber City, Utah) earned the win in the net, stopping all four shots on goal in the 90 minutes of play. Worcester State's Jason Barrett (Spencer, Mass.) collected six saves in the loss.
