Worcester State Selected to Repeat as 2017 MASCAC Men’s Soccer Champions

MASCAC Release

The reigning Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer regular season and tournament champions, Worcester State, have been selected to repeat this season as decided by the eight coaches from around the league.

The Lancers claimed three of the first place votes for a total of 45 points in the preseason poll. Last season, they finished atop the standings with a 5-2 record in league play and a 12-7 overall record.

Returning this season is 2016 First Team All-Conference honoree Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) who led the MASCAC in total points with 25 last season on 11 goals and three assists. He was also third in the conference in game-winning goals with three.

Also returning for the Lancers are 2016 First Team All-Conference honorees Matthew Dent (Ludlow, Mass.) and Jason Barrett (Spencer, Mass.) at the center back and goalkeeper positions, respectively. As a defender, Dent was third on the team in points last season with 14 on five goals and four assists. Barrett led the MASCAC in wins (9) and goals-against average (1.04) in 2016.

The Lancers also welcome back senior forward Andre Ipojuca (Saugus, Mass.) and senior midfielders Etjon Rapi (Worcester, Mass.) and Ryan Almeida (Palmer, Mass.). Notable newcomers for the Blue and Gold include Aboody Abdullahi (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), Dillon Pooler (Southampton, Mass.), and Momodou Kabareh (Worcester, Mass.).

The 2017 season begins on September 1 when the Lancers travel across-town to WPI for a 4 p.m. game. The home opener for the men's soccer team is on September 6 when they host Keene State in a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
