Second Half Corner Kick Goals Push UMass Boston Past Worcester State, 4-2

WORCESTER, Mass. – Second half corner kick goals from Marcelo Cunha (Goiania, Brazil) and Guilherme Barbosa (Saugus, Mass.) pushed the visiting UMass Boston Beacons past the Worcester State Lancers, 4-2, in a wet Wednesday evening matchup at Coughlin Field.

1ST HALF

Cunha started things off for UMass Boston when he found Alden Rosa (Dorchester, Mass.) for the header in the 15th minute off a free kick about 30 yards out on the right side.  Jake Davenport  (Weymouth, Mass.) helped make it a 2-0 lead with his second goal of the year, assisted by Raffi DeSouza (Watertown, Mass.) in the 29th minute.  

 

Worcester State eventually equalized the score with a good penalty kick from Justin Echeverry (Methuen, Mass.) in the 33rd minute, and a header from Mitch Myrthil (Clinton, Mass.) that was assisted by Matthew Dent (Ludlow, Mass.) on a throw-in in the 38th minute.

 

2ND HALF

Each team struggled to convert on their scoring opportunities in the second half, but UMass Boston was able to find a way with goals from Cunha and Barbosa off corner kicks late in the game.  Worcester State was held without a goal, resulting in the 4-2 win for the Beacons.

 

COUNT ME IN

  • Cunha led the attack for the Beacons as he tallied one goal and one assist to total three points.
  • Daniel Morales (San Diego, Calif.) registered two assists, both of which were off corner kicks in the second half.
  • UMass Boston's Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) improves to 2-1-2 on the season in net, as he tallied one save in the win.
  • Worcester State's goaltender, Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) moves to 1-1 on the season as he stopped 3-of-7 shots on goal.
  • UMass Boston held a wide 24-8 margin in shots over the Lancers.
  • Despite the 24 Beacon shots, only seven of them were marked on goal for a .292 shot on goal percentage. Worcester State recorded a .667 shot on goal percentage in the loss.

 

UP NEXT

The Worcester State men's soccer team will match up against MASCAC opponent, Fitchburg State, on Saturday (Sep. 23) at Coughlin Field. The Beacons also resume play on Saturday when they return home for a 4:00 p.m. matchup against Little East Conference opponent, Plymouth State.
