Dent’s Header Gives Lancers Double Overtime Win over Blazers, 3-2

CHICOPEE, Mass. –  Worcester State University's Dillon Pooler (Southampton, Mass.) found the head of Matthew Dent (Ludlow, Mass.) with 2:38 remaining in the second overtime period off a free kick for the game-winning goal, as the Lancers of Worcester State University defeated the Elms College Blazers 3-2 in Wednesday evening play.

1ST HALF

Worcester State quickly got on the board, as Etjon Rapi (Worcester, Mass.) tallied his third goal of the season with helpers from Andre Ipojuca (Saugus, Mass.) and Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.). Worcester State fired off five additional shots, while Elms notched five shots in the stanza, though, neither team was able to put another figure on the scoreboard, resulting in a 1-0 score at the half.

 

2ND HALF

Rapi scored his second goal of the game – fourth of the season – in the 63rd minute when Pooler found the foot of Rapi who slid the ball past the left side of the keeper, AJ Oliveria (Beacon Falls, Conn.) for the 2-0 advantage. Despite the 2-point gain for Worcester State, Elms registered two late goals to knot the score at 2-2 with goals from John Dunphy (Farmington, Conn.) (assisted by CJ Dabowski) and Colby Macdonald (Bristol, Conn.) in the 74th and 85th minutes, ensuing a tie score at the end of regulation.

 

OVERTIME

Following a scoreless first overtime period, Worcester State University wrapped up the night with a header from Dent in the 108th minute to cap the 3-2 double overtime victory.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Rapi led the Lancers with two goals on the evening, while Dent scored the game-winner. Both Rapi and Dent guided the Lancers' offense with four and three shots on net.
  • The Blazers' Babba Jaden (Clarkston, Ga.) collected a team-high five shots (2 SOG) in the contest.
  • Worcester State's sophomore goaltender, Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) earned his second win in net as he tallied four saves in 107:22 minutes played.
  • Elms' Oliviera took the loss in goal as he stopped 3-of-6 shots on net for a .500 save percentage on the evening. Worcester State held a 16-15 edge in shots. Both teams were uniform with six shots on goal (6 each) and corner kicks (8 apiece).
