WORCESTER, Mass. – Rhode Island College's Gabriel Paiz (North Providence, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Dennis Vazquez (Providence, R.I.) in the 54th minute to lead the Anchormen to a 1-0 win over the host, Worcester State University, in a Tuesday evening matchup at Coughlin Field.

 

THE BASICS

1ST HALF

Worcester State and Rhode Island College traded shots in the first 10 minutes of play, however, neither was on goal. The Lancers' Manassah Konadu (Worcester, Mass.) registered the first shot on net in the 11th minute which was saved by the Anchormen's goalie, Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, R.I.). The Anchormen didn't see their first shot on net until the 28th minute when Kossivi Dogbey (Providence, R.I.) fired a shot off. The score remained 0-0 at the half, as Konadu and Dogbey's shots were the only shots on net in the half.

 

2ND HALF

The Anchormen were the first and only to reach the scoreboard in the second half when Paiz gave Rhode Island College the game-winner. Vazquez sent a through-ball to Paiz who then kicked the ball past Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) for the 1-0 edge. Worcester State fought back with four shots and a corner kick in the last 15 minutes of play, but were unable to take the lead away from the Anchormen.  

 

BY THE BOOK

  • Paiz scored his first goal of the season in the win, while Vazquez registered his third helper of the season.
  • Vazquez and Derek Delahoz (Central Falls, R.I.) led the Anchormen with three shots apiece.
  • Worcester State's offense was led by Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) and Andre Ipojuca (Saugus, Mass.) who tallied three and two shots, respectively.  
  • Rhode Island College's Tashjian earned his sixth win in goal, stopping three shots on net.
  • Guilmette was tabbed the loss for the Blue and Gold as he also made three saves this evening.
  • Worcester State held the advantage in shots (12-10) and corner kicks (5-1).

The Lancers host Becker on Thursday (Oct. 12) in a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt.
