Men's Soccer Rallies for Season's First Win

NORTH QUINCY, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's soccer team used two second half goals Saturday evening to secure a 2-1 win over Eastern Nazarene at Creedon Field in the first ever meeting between the two sides.

The Lions dip to 0-2-0 on the season while the Lancers improve to 1-1-0 overall with the victory.

The home team jumped ahead 1-0 in the eighth minute as Cyprian Okwaro (Randolph, Mass.) bagged his first collegiate goal. The rookie picked off a pass before slipping a shot past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Eastern Nazarene fired nine shots in the first half while Worcester State registered seven attempts.

The Lancers pulled even in the 59th minute as a right-footed volley from Gift Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.) snuck inside the near post for his first tally of the season.

The visitors nabbed a 2-1 edge with a strike in the 79th minute. Senior captain Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) rifled in a direct free kick from just outside the box for his first goal of the year.

The Lions finished with 13 shots and six corner kicks earned. Worcester State posted 14 shots on the night and seven corner kicks.

Rookie Florian Resch (St. Stefan, Austria) stopped four shots in net for the hosts, while Lancer goalkeeper Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) got the win making six stops.

Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene visits Regis (Mass.) September 5 for a non-league tilt, while the Lancers will be back in action against Rhode Island College the same evening.
