Men's Soccer Blanks Western New England

LUDLOW, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's soccer team got past Western New England University by a score of 1-0 Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Lusitano Stadium.

With the win, the Lancers move to .500 on the season at 6-6-2. The Golden Bears drop to 9-6-2 in the defeat.

The Golden Bears outshot the Lancers 9-3 in the first half, but could not find the back of the net, as the contest went to the break without a score. Worcester State junior goalkeeper made three saves in the half to keep the game scoreless.

The Lancers would get on the board midway through the second half in what would prove to be the only goal of the night. Freshman Cyrus Raines (Belchertown, Mass.) found the back of the net off a Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) corner in the game's 64th minute for his first career goal, putting the Lancers into the lead at 1-0.

Western New England outshot Worcester State 5-1 after Raines' go-ahead goal, but the Golden Bears could not find the equalizer as keeper Abdulrazek Frederick (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who came in for Guilmette at the half, kept the Lancers in front as the final whistle sounded. Frederick was credited with his first career win on the night, recording four saves in the second half.

Next up for the Lancers, they'll be back at home for a 12 p.m. contest against Framingham State on Saturday. The contest kicks off a three-match, regular season-ending home stand for Worcester State.
