Men's Soccer defeats Mass Maritime in Senior Day Matchup

Worcester, Mass.- The Worcester State University men's soccer team defeated the Mass Maritime Buccaneers by a score of 2-1 on Friday night in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Coughlin Field in a Senior Day matchup.

The Lancers improve their record to 7-8-2 (4-2-1 in MASCAC). The Buccaneers fall to 5-11-1 (1-6 in MASCAC).

The first half was mostly uneventful. Each team had a few opportunities, but neither could find the back of the net. The score remained 0-0 after the first 45 minutes. The Buccaneers outshot the Lancers seven to five.

In the 66th minute of action Stephen Froio (Auburn, Mass.) dribbled through two defenders and scored his first goal of the season unassisted.

The Lancers 42 seconds later were able to quickly tie the score back up. Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) and Tomas Caneira (Dartmouth, Mass.) set Ethan Melia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) up for the quick comeback goal in the second half.

The teams drew even until 5 minutes into overtime when Brasil took control of the ball and netted his seventh goal of the season on senior day to win the game for the Lancers.

Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) earned the win, recording seven saves in the effort. Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) recorded the loss for Mass. Maritime with two saves in the game.

Teams await the MASCAC seeding for the 2018 playoffs over the weekend.
