WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's soccer team fell short to UMass Boston by a final score of 2-1 on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.
With the loss, the Lancers drop to 2-5-0 on the season, while the Beacons improve to 4-1-1.
The visitors got on the board early, tallying a goal from Estevao Gomes in just the fourth minute of action.
The Lancers had a chance to equalize in the 15th minute when a penalty kick was awarded to Worcester State, but Lincoln Henry (Kingston, Jamaica) was denied by UMass Boston's Omar Castro-Dreher to keep the score at 1-0.
Yuran Teixeira scored midway through the first half for the Beacons to extend his team's lead to 2-0, which would be the score when the teams went to the locker room for the half.
In the 56th minute, Henry had another penalty kick opportunity, but this time buried one past Castro-Dreher to cut the deficit to 2-1. Worcester State was unable to find an equalizer in the final 34 minutes of the contest, and the Beacons escaped with the victory.
Worcester State goalkeeper Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) turned aside nine Beacon shots, but was dealt the loss. Castro-Dreher was the winning goalkeeper for UMass Boston, making four saves.
The Beacons held a heavy shot advantage in the contest, outshooting the Lancers 24-7, including a mark of 16-1 in the first half. Worcester State held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks, but was unable to generate any chances off the set pieces.
Worcester State will be back in action on Friday to open MASCAC play on the road at Mass. Maritime. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Buzzards Bay.
