Men's Soccer Overpowers Becker

LEICESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's soccer team made quick work of Becker College Thursday afternoon, defeating the Hawks 6-0 in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 4-7-0 on the season. Becker falls to 1-11-1.

Worcester State was dominant right from the jump, as the Lancers took the lead in just the ninth minute of action. Sophomore defender Cyrus Raines (Belchertown, Mass.) nodded in his first goal of the season off a Laszlo Dorogi (West Boylston, Mass.) corner kick to put the Lancers ahead 1-0.

Just 2:01 later, in the 11th minute, Worcester State stretched its lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal by freshman Hamza Shakir (Worcester, Mass.). Shakir chipped the Becker goalkeeper as he broke down the left wing to net his second goal of the season.

In the 23rd minute, the Lancers went up 3-0 on a mirror image corner kick goal from Raines off another Dorogi assist. The 3-0 advantage would hold until the half. Worcester State held a 12-6 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes.

Dorogi added a goal of his own on a penalty kick in the 57th minute, his first collegiate goal, as he tucked a shot into the bottom left corner of the net past the diving Becker keeper.

The freshman scored again just four minutes later to put Worcester State ahead 5-0. On a Lancer free kick played into the box, two Hawk defenders collided trying to clear the ball, which instead ricocheted right to Dorogi, who quickly fired it into the cage.

Sophomore Tomas Caneira (Dartmouth, Mass.) netted his first collegiate goal in the 87th minute to seal the deal for the Lancers. Senior Justin Echeverry (Methuen, Mass.) tallied an assist on the late tally.

Senior Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) got the shutout win in goal for the Lancers, making three saves in the victory.

Next up for the Lancers, they will return to action on Saturday for a MASCAC battle against MCLA. Becker will be in action the same day, traveling to New England College. Both games are slated for 12 p.m. kickoffs.
