Cambridge, MA --- Highlighted by a pair of first-place performances and Division III qualifying performances by senior teammates Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA) and Jon Parrella (Wilmington, MA), both helped propel the men's track and field team on Saturday afternoon at the non-scoring MIT Co-Ed Invitational.
Mazieka sprinted to his top time of 1:25.05 in the 600 meters before Parrella added a split of 51.42 in the 400. Sophomore Patrick Bova (Princeton, MA) also added first in the 1,000 (2:47.80) and the mile (4:42.64).
Second-year Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) continued his stellar season with the top time in three events which includes the 60 (6.99), the 200 (23.03) and he stamped his ticket for the Open New England's and established a new school record in the 60 meter hurdles (8.46).
Gibson also surpassed his own mark that he set last season in the 60 meter hurdles at Tufts on February 4 (8.57). For his efforts this past week, Gibson was tabbed MASCAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week.
Sophomore Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty) notched second in the 60 (7.14), third in both the 60 meter hurdles (8.65) and long jump (6.30m) as well as sixth in the triple jump (12.56m). Truong's 60 meter hurdles time marked his season-best and it helped add his name to the list of ECAC Division III qualifiers.
Junior Ramses Rafael (Lawrence, MA) registered second in the 200 (23.38) and third in the 400 (53.33) while second-year Stephen Gannon (Foxboro, MA) placed second in the 400 (52.41) and third in the 200 (23.40).
Parrella, Rafael, Gannon and freshman Justin Trafford (Tewksbury, MA) wrapped up their afternoon with first in the 4x400 meter relay (3:34.23).
Parrella also had a time of fourth in the 200 (23.61) as junior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) finished fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.93).
Senior Luke Curtis (Dudley, MA) and sophomore Matthew Alley (Milford, MA) tied for third in the 60 (7.28) while sophomore Kevin Conant (E. Longmeadow, MA) was right behind in fifth (7.29). With his time, Alley qualified for the Division III New England Championships.
The distance corps was also led by junior Connor O'Neill (Dudley, MA) who placed second in the 1,000 (2:50.40) and mile (4:45.38). Senior Kerry Sabanty (Stoughton, MA) and Trafford both tallied second (1:26.63) and third (1:28.43), respectively.
In the field, junior Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) had a leap of second in the high jump (1.93m) and sophomore Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) chalked up second in the shot put (13.47m).
Second-year Daniel Ross (Foxboro, MA) cleared third in the high jump (1.88m) as sophomore Robert White (Ludlow, MA) placed third in the shot put (13.04m) and eighth in the weight throw (13.32m).
Senior Sebastian Bilentschuk (Mansfield, MA) rounded out the meet with fourth in the weight throw (15.20m).
Next week Worcester State will compete at the Tufts Stampede Invitational as a warm-up to the MASCAC/Alliance Championships on February 9 at Southern Maine.
