#18 Men's Indoor Track Ties For Tenth At Division III New England Championships

Springfield, MA --- Senior Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) successfully defended his 60 meter hurdles title for the third consecutive season with a record time of 7.98 to help pace the #18 Worcester State men's track and field team to tie for tenth overall at the Division III New England Indoor Championships hosted by Springfield.

The Lancers were among the top 10 for the third consecutive season with 24 points as MIT won the team title with 129 points followed by Bates (73) and Williams (71).

Gibson, put up the second-best time in Division III, as he scorched the track in the preliminary round with a top time of 8.01 before clocking the seventh-best time in event history in the finals. He also added ninth in the 200 meters (23.00).

Senior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) earned All-Division III New England accolades with second overall in the heptathlon netting 4,294 points.

Sliwoski, who captured All-New England heptathlon honors for the third time in his career, tied for fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.11), notched seventh in the pole vault (12-1.50/3.70m) and he had the ninth-best 1,000 (3:03.91).

Friday afternoon on the first day of the Division III New England Championships, Sliwoski won the long jump (21-0.50/6.41 meters), placed third in the shot put (39-1.75/11.93m) before vaulting to fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (7.44) and tying for fifth in the high jump (5-7.75/1.72m).

Sophomore Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) was handed an All-Division III New England certificate with fourth in the 200 (22.85) and senior Robert White (Ludlow, MA) rounded out the point scorers with eighth with a All-New England performance in the weight throw (51-4.50/15.66m) which helped him qualify for the ECAC Division III Championships.

In the shot put, senior Sam Weeks (Methuen, MA) tossed ninth (45-3/13.79m), just inches out of the running for All-New England honors as senior Daniel Ross (Foxboro, MA) equaled 10th in the high jump (6-2/1.88m) and  senior Stephen Gannon (Mansfield, MA) notched 11th in the 400 (51.38).

The 4x400 meter relay of Barros, junior Marc George (Framingham, MA), freshman Marquis Johnson (W. Hartford, CT) and Gannon at anchor placed 15th with a time of 3:34.62 and the 4x800 relay of freshman teammates Patrick Scheeler (Wakefield, MA), Ariel Torres (N. Andover, MA), Devin Luce (Milford, MA) and Johnson ran a season-best time of 8:39.78 in 17th.

The all-senior distance medley relay team of Pat Daley (Millbury, MA), Shaun Corum (Billerica, MA), Adam Pepin (Paxton, MA) and Wesley Hebert (Leominster, MA) wrapped up their indoor careers with a time of 11:25.27 in 16th place.

Freshman Mamudu Dennis (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) rounded out the field with 22nd in the 60 (7.26).

Next week qualifying student-athletes will run at the Open New England Championships hosted by BU.
