BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Worcester State University's junior thrower Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) has earned All-American honors as he finished seventh place in the weight throw at the NCAA Division III Championships Friday afternoon.
Vieira came in seventh place with a top throw of 18.73m (61' 5.5"), scoring two points for his team, and earning the All-American status.
This season, Vieira broke his own school record in the weight throw twice. The first record-breaking took place on Jan. 13 at the Tufts Invite when he threw for a distance of 18.71m (61' 4.75"). He then broke that on Feb. 25 at the Boston University Tufts Last Chance Qualifier with a monster throw of 19.15m (62' 10") which put him second in New England, and fifth nationally.
He won the weight throw competition at four meets this season (2017 Husky Indoor Invitational, Inaugural Branwen Smith-King Invitational, Boston University Last Chance Qualifier, and Tufts National Qualifying Meet).
COACHES CORNER
"It's been a pretty special season for Marcus and today capped it off," commented throws coach, Shawn McCabe. "For him to have to sit out last year as the 16th person in the country and then to come out this year and accomplish all that he has is just a testimony to all the hard work, focus, and energy he puts into perfecting his craft."
"It been a pleasure to watch him week in and week out go after his goals this indoor season," said McCabe. "This will act as motivation to push him through the upcoming outdoor season and hopefully help him build and continue the year that he has and end it on a high note."
