WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University's sophomore Justin Lewis (Lynn, Mass.) has been named the first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) indoor field athlete of the week after his top performance at the UMass Boston Open this past weekend.
Lewis, the 2017 DIII men's outdoor track & field high jump champion, led the Lancers by tying the meet record in the high jump with a height of 2.10m (6' 10.75"), which was good for a first place finish at the meet.
"Justin has started this indoor season where he left off last spring," mentioned head coach Al Halper. "His 6' 11.75" jump was clean and well over the bar as were two of his attempts at the next height. He had two really good attempts at 7' 1.25" but has to clean up technique issues over the bar. The fact that he jumped this well in the first meet of the season, puts him in great position to have a career PR during the indoor season."
With is markings on Saturday, he qualifies for both Division III New England and All-New England's and currently stands as the Division III New England leader in the high jump and is tied for first in all of Division III.
"Justin should remain atop the list throughout the season and vie for the indoor national title based on his great performance this past weekend," said Halper. "He has literally "set the bar" for everyone else in his event and set the tone for his Lancer teammates to follow in their own training and performance level. "
The men's track & field team returns to competition this weekend as they travel to the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on Saturday (Dec. 9) for the Northeastern Invitational.
