Men's Outdoor Track Claims Top Prize At Springfield Invitational

 

Men's Outdoor Track Ranked Ninth In USTFCCCA New England Regional Index

 

Springfield, MA --- Senior Todd Paquin (Pelham, NH) won the 100 meters (10.91) and placed second in the 200 meters (22.21) to help Worcester State claim first at the Springfield Invitational.

The Lancers netted 158 points to outpace UMass Dartmouth (118), Division II Saint Rose (93) and MASCAC rival Westfield State (88).

Junior Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty) was also the runner up in the 100 (11.04) and 110 meter hurdles (15.26) before he led off on the winning 4x100 meter relay (42.86) that included Paquin, junior Matthew Alley (Milford, MA) and freshman Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) at anchor.

Third-year David Germain (Malden, MA) was second in the high jump (6-6/1.93m) and sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.36) while classmate Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) placed second in the hammer (148-5/45.23m), fifth in the javelin (167-6/51.05m) and eighth in the shot put (44-4/13.51m).

Barros notched third in the 200 with a new personal best (22.30) and ninth in the 400 (52.21) while classmate Charles Newman (Westfield, MA) added fifth in the 100 and Alley was right behind in sixth (11.22).

First-year Franklin Dallas (New London, CT) placed fourth in the 200 (22.80) and Newman was sixth in the 200 (22.83) as junior Stephen Gannon (Mansfield, MA) timed seventh in the 400 (52.21) and ninth in the 200 (22.94).

Junior Dan Ross (Foxboro, MA) and senior Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) tied for third in the high jump (1.83m/6-0) while senior Steven Fleming (Ludlow, MA) was third in the pole vault (12-1.50/3.70m).

The distance corps were paced by senior Pat Daley (Millbury, MA) who was fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:15.47) and junior Adam Pepin (Paxton, MA) who recorded sixth just seconds apart (11:18.88) as well as ninth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.34).

WSU had four point scorers in the triple jump which included sophomore Shawn Seamans (Newton, MA), classmate Dana Perry (Mendon, MA), freshman Tyler Nims (Ashburnham, MA) and classmate Andrew Valle (Stoughton, MA) who were third (39-11.5/12.18m), fifth (38-11.75/11.88m), sixth (38-3.25/11.88m) and seventh (38-1.25/11.61m), respectively.

Nims also registered sixth in the long jump (20-5/6.22m) while freshman Sam Weeks (Methuen, MA) tossed sixth in the discus (129-0/39.31m) and seventh in the shot put (44-8.75/13.63m). Junior Mario De Jesus (Lawrence, MA) placed seventh in the javelin (161-0/49.80m).

The third place sprint medley team of sophomore Benjamin Dussault (Assonet, MA) leading off, Dallas second, junior Kevin Conant (E. Longmeadow, MA) third and second-year Edwin Nash (Charlton, MA) timed 3:38.25.

The 4x400 squad of freshman Shane McKinley (Melrose, MA), Barros second, Gannon in the third leg and Paquin at anchor placed fifth (3:44.15).

The Lancers will return to the track on Tuesday with the Holy Cross Invitational as a warm-up before competing in the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, April 26.
