Men's Outdoor Track Notches Ninth At Division III New England Championships

 

Cambridge, MA --- Sophomore Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) won the 100 meters (10.77) and placed second in the 200 (21.94) to propel the Worcester State men's track and field team to ninth at the Division III New England Championships.

With 36 points to their credit, Lancers recorded a top ten standing at the Division III New England Outdoor Championships for the fourth consecutive year.

Senior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) earned All-Divsion III New England honors for the fourth time in his career as the runner-up with 6,292 points in the decathlon as he was first in the long jump (21-8.75/6.62m) and discus (38.41m/126-0.50).

With the 24th fastest 100 time in Division III, Barros is the second consecutive WSU student-athlete and third overall win the event as current assistant coach Todd Paquin did it last season and former All-American Stanley Egbor earned three career crowns at the Division III New England's.

Classmate Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) clocked fifth in the 100 (11.06).

Sophomore Sam Weeks (Methuen, MA) added sixth in the discus (141-3.50/43.06m) and shot put (47-3.75/14.42m) for a pair of Division III New England certificates. Weeks was also ninth in the hammer (137-3.50/41.84m).

Freshman Caleb White (Carlton, MA) placed 15th in the 110 meter hurdles (16.49) before recording 25th in the 400 meter hurdles (56.68). Sophomore Marc George (Framingham, MA/Marion) put up a season-best time of 1:56.18 for 16th in the 800.

Senior Mario De Jesus (Lawrence, MA) heaved 13th in the javelin (158-4/48.25m), classmate Daniel Ross (Foxboro, MA) tied for 14th in the high jump (6-0/1.83m) and senior Elijah Mawejje (Woburn, MA) had a leap of 18th in the long jump (19-11/6.07m).

In relay action, Barros, freshman Marquis Johnson (E. Hartford, CT), classmate Angel Martinez (Lawrence, MA) and George notched 3:26.87 for 11th in the 4x400. Caleb White, junior Adam Scerra (Marlboro, MA) and Martinez also added 16th in the 4x100.

The 4x800 relay of freshman Patrick Scheeler (Wakefield, MA), classmate Greg Acosta (Lawrence, MA), first-year teammate Devin Luce (Milford, MA) and senior Adam Pepin (Paxton, MA) placed 20th (8:25.92).

Senior Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) withdrew on Friday from the decathlon to concentrate on the open javelin.

Next week the Blue and Gold will come back to MIT to participate in the Open New England Championships.

 

 




 

From Thursday: "Sliwoski In Second Place At Division III New England Decathlon"

 

Cambridge, MA --- Senior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) is just 23 points off the leader with 3,313 decathlon points on the first day of the Division III New England Championships on Thursday afternoon.

Sliwoski won the long jump (21-8.50/6.62m), finished third in the 100 meters (11.57), placed fourth in both the high jump (5-7.50/1.72m) and shot put (36-10.75/11.25m before clocking fifth in the 400 (52.47).

Entering Fridays competition, Sliwoski looks to better his second place finish from 2014 at the Division III New England Championships and his school record sum of 6,246. Sliwoski is currently in 29th place in the national decathlon rankings with 5,871 points as he will try to move into the top 20 to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships in three weeks.

In seventh place was fourth-year teamate Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) who tallied 3,063 points.

Begley impressed the field by winning the shot put by 5-8.50 feet for a distance of 46-10 (14.28m) before he added fifth in the 100 (11.62), tied for seventh in the high jump (5-6.50/1.69m) to go with a leap of 18-2.50 (5.55m) in the long jump and 55.93 in the 400.
