WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Worcester State University men's outdoor track & field team captured its first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) outdoor title since 1976 and also claimed the MASCAC/Little East Conference Alliance title in the makings.
Worcester State's throwers dominated the MASCAC, as 74 of the Lancers' 208 points came from them. Sophomore thrower, Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) was tabbed the MASCAC and Alliance hammer throw champion with a throw of 55.48m. Senior Sam Weeks (Methuen, Mass.) earned the MASCAC and Alliance title in both the shot put and discus with top distances of 16.41m and 49.35m, respectively, and came in 3rd in the hammer (52.83m). Vieira also placed in the shot put (13.94) and discus (45.79).
Worcester State also saw top performances from Jacob Roumanos (Whitman, Mass.), Elmer Acuna (Newton, Mass.) and Anthony Christo (Peabody, Mass.) in the throws. Roumanos came in 3rd in the shot put (14.24m) and 3rd (4th Alliance) in the discus (41.53m). Acuna came in 5th (6th Alliance) in the shot put (13.83m). Christo marked a 3rd place finish (6th Alliance) in the hammer (47.14m). Alexander Mandragouras (Newbury, Mass.) collected MASCASC points in the javelin throw (49.06m) with a 5th place MASCAC finish.
Rookie Edward Boamah (Worcester, Mass.) was a dual MASCAC/Alliance Champion in both the 200 Meter Dash and the 400 Meter Dash. He claimed a 200 Meter Dash time of 21.90, and broke a MASCAC record in the 400 Meter Dash with a time in 47.78 seconds. In addition to the 400 Meter record breaking, Boamah qualified for All New England's in the event. He also qualified for Division III New England's in the long jump this afternoon (6.50m), and claimed a MASCAC 2nd place in the triple jump (13.44m).
Gibson, Charles Newman (Westfield, Mass.), and Jared Barros (Taunton, Mass.) scored in the 200 Meters, while Marc George (Framingham, Mass.) scored in the 400 Meters (MASCAC). Marques Johnson (W. Hartford, Conn.) earned 2nd place (3rd Alliance) in the 800 Meters (1:57.21), while Patrick Scheeler (Wakefield, Mass.) followed at 1:58.70 (4th MASCAC/5th Alliance) while Jeffrey Davis (Old Lyme, Conn.) came in 6th MASCAC. Johnson qualifies for Division III New England's with his result.
Jalil Gibson (Lynn, Mass.) earned the MASCAC crown in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 11.10 seconds (8th Alliance). Phillip Bynum (Peabody, Mass.) and Barros came in 5th and 6th places (14th/15th Alliance), respectively in the same event.
Michael Ricci (Peabody, Mass.) earned 2nd place in the MASCAC in the 3000 Steeplechase (4th Alliance) in a time of 10:09.61.
Worcester State's 4x100 Meter Relay of Gibson, Newman, Bynum, and Barros took the MASCAC title as they completed the relay in a time of 42.83. The 4x800 Meter Relay of Scheeler, Davis , Christian Torres (Lowell, Mass.), and Mitchell Cupp (N. Attleboro, Mass.) earned 3rd place in the MASCAC (7th Alliance) in a time of 8:43.47.
Worcester State's Isaac Ofori (Webster, Mass.) scored eight points (2nd place MASCASC) towards the MASCAC totals in the 400 Meter Hurdles, with a time of 56.41 – good for 4th place in the Alliance.
Justin Lewis (Lynn, Mass.) claimed the MASCAC and Alliance title in the high jump with a top clearing of 2.01m. Markiesh Harmon (Leominster, Mass.) and CJ Hernandez (Lynn, Mass.) also competed in the event and came in 5th and 6th in the MASCASC to add in three more points to the Lancers' total.
Scott Page (Baldwinville, Mass.) was pronounced the MASCAC Champion in the pole vault (2nd Alliance) at 4.40m. Brett Robinson (Westborough, Mass.) also scored in the event (3.80m).
This upcoming week, a group of Lancers will travel to Williams College to take part in the Division III New England Championships (May 4-6).
