GENEVA, Ohio – Worcester State University's rookie Justin Lewis (Lynn, Mass.) earned his first NCAA Division III national title and the Lancers' men's track & field team's second-ever individual title in program history as he leaped for a personal record (PR) and school record of 2.16m in the finals round of the high jump competition at the NCAA Division III National Championships Friday (May 26) afternoon.
"Today was one for the record books," commented Worcester State Associate Head Coach, Matthew Swett. "It was truly a great day for Worcester State University."
Lewis' previous PR in the high jump was 2.07m, which he registered at the Holy Cross men's meet back on April 24. With today's title, he has captured a total of six outdoor high jump wins over the course of the 2017 spring season (Tufts Invite, Trinity College Invitational, Holy Cross Men's Meet, New England Alliance Outdoor Track & Field Championship, NEICAAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, NCAA Division III National Championships).
"Within the best high jump field in the country, Justin just wanted it more," said Swett. "He was composed and focus from the start. It was his apron when we arrived on Wednesday and he let everyone know it today."
Also competing in the NCAA Division III National Championships today was senior Sam Weeks (Methuen, Mass.) and freshman Edward Boamah (Worcester, Mass.) in the shot put and 400 Meters, respectively.
The MASCAC/Alliance shot put champion, Weeks, came up just short of All-American status today as he threw for a distance of 16.25m for 9th place. He currently holds a 16.70m PR in the shot put which he marked last week at the MIT Division III Final Qualifying meet.
Weeks, who earned All-American honors in the discus throw yesterday, will continue to compete tomorrow, as he is projected to throw the hammer at 1:30 p.m.
Boamah came into the meet with a 400m PR and MASCAC record time of 47.78, which he earned at the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships on April 29. Today, he marked a 49.10 time which was good for 15th place at the meet.
