Outdoor Track & Field Opens Season at BSU Bears Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Sophomore Abdulrazak Frederick (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and senior Mia Rogers (North Dighton, Mass.) each won events Saturday to lead the Worcester State University men's and women's outdoor track & field teams at the season-opening Bridgewater State Bears Invitational.

Rogers and teammate Elisabeth Olson (Wilmington, Mass.) finished first and second respectively in the women's 5,000-meter run on the day. Rogers had a winning time of 18:35.60, followed by Olson's time of 18:57.34. Freshman Ryann Molinari (Grafton, Mass.) finished in fifth in the event with a time of 19:45.13. 

Senior Stephanie McFadries (Burlington, Mass.) led the Lancer women in the field events, with an impressive throw of 38.91 meters in the javelin to finish in second place overall. On the track, junior Rachel Stier (Mansfield, Mass.) finished in third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.22, while classmate Brenda Thomas (Worcester, Mass.) finished close behind her in eighth place with a time of 1:06.04.

Frederick's speedy run of 16.12 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles placed him atop the podium, leading a laundry list of strong showings for the Lancer men. Also on the track, senior Joe Grider (Hopedale, Mass.) placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run, running a time of 4:21.23, while junior Richie Custodio (Wakefield, Mass.) was eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.37.

In the field events, a third place finish by senior Ryan Connolly (Braintree, Mass.) in the triple jump (12.44 meters) led a quintet of Lancers with top-six finishes. Freshman Kyle Haley (Mansfield, Mass.) finished right behind Connolly in the triple jump in fifth place, clearing 12.20 meters. Junior Eddy Acuna (Newton, Mass.) and senior Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.) finished fourth and fifth respectively in the shot put, throwing 14.43 and 14.07 meters. In the javelin throw, freshman Dariel Canela (Peabody, Mass.) finished sixth with a throw of 50.01 meters.

The Lancer men and women will both be back in action next Saturday at the Corsair Classic at UMass Dartmouth. First events are scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m.
