Track & Field Wraps Up Season at MIT Final Qualifier

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's and women's outdoor track & field teams concluded their 2019 seasons on Thursday evening in a final qualifying meet at Morrison Track.

In their final opportunity to do so, no Lancers were able to make the necessary marks to qualify for the NCAA Championships scheduled for next weekend in Geneva, Ohio, concluding the 2018-19 academic year for all of Worcester State Athletics.

Sophomore Bernice Mensah (Worcester, Mass.) had the Lancers' top finish of the day, placing second in the triple jump in her lone event. Mensah jumped a distance of 11.68 meters.

Also representing the women's team was junior Abigail MacGregor (Salem, N.H.), who competed in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. MacGregor was third in the 100 with a time of 12.61 seconds, and sixth in the 200 with a time of 26.03 seconds.

On the men's side, John Ojukwu (Stow, Mass.) was the fifth place finisher in the final of the 100-meter dash, running a time of 11.08 seconds. Senior Ryan Connolly (Braintree, Mass.) also competed in the event for the first time in his collegiate career, running a time of 12.03 seconds for an eighth place finish.

Connolly also took part in a pair of jumping events, placing fourth in the triple jump at 12.84 meters, and sixth in the high jump at 1.91 meters.

Three Worcester State men's throwers competed on the evening, led by senior Marcus Vieira (Peabody, Mass.). Vieira finished fourth in the hammer throw at 51.41 meters, fifth in the shot put at 13.75 meters, and seventh in the discus at 44.56. Junior Eddy Acuna (Newton, Mass.) participated in the discus throw with a fourth place finish (46.08 meters), while senior Anthony Christo (Peabody, Mass.) participated in the hammer throw, finishing eighth at 46.89 meters.
