Custodio Earns MASCAC Rookie of the Week Accolade

WORCESTER, Mass. – Worcester State University's freshman runner, Richard Custodio (Wakefield, Mass.) has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week for his performance at the University of New England Invitational on Saturday (Sep. 10).

Custodio crossed the finish line in 18th place with an 8K time of 29:12.

"Rich ran an aggressive race from the start, maintained a strong position throughout the race," commented head coach Al Halper. "And finished well."

He marked the third best freshman in the race.

"This only being his second collegiate race," Halper stated.  "Rich made significant adjustments this week. I challenged the team to step it up and Rich took the challenge staying close to team leader Mike Ricci who also pushed the pace."

Rich has a bright future as he continues to gain experience at the longer 8k collegiate race distance," concluded Halper. "You hope to recruit freshmen that will have an impact on the team's success and Rich has certainly been able to do that."
