Men’s Cross Country Takes Fourth at Worcester City Meet - Worcester State

PAXTON, Mass. – The Worcester State men's cross country team came in 4^th place of five teams at this year's Worcester City Meet, as WPI took its 44^th all-time team win with eight runners in the top-10.

RECAP

WPI secured eight of the top-10 spots in the race, as they won their 44^th all-time (3^rd consecutive) Worcester City meet title. Avery Ingegneri (Warwick, R.I.) led the way for the Engineers finishing the 8K in a time of 27:50. One second behind him was teammate Tom Hanlon (Derry, N.H.), with a time of 27:51. Worcester State's Devin Luce (Milford, Mass.) was the first Lancer to cross the finish line, as he came in 15^th place with a time of 29:45. Next up for the Lancers finishing in 25^th place was junior, Christian Vera (Worcester, Mass.) with a time of 31:15. In 33^rd, 34^th, and 35^th places came Christian Torres (Lowell, Mass.), Jack Newcomb (Chelmsford, Mass.), and John Shugrue (Worcester, Mass.), respectively. Finishing out for the Lancers was Alex Dalelio (Lynnfield, Mass.) in 40^th place, and Omar Cardova (Worcester, Mass.) in 42^nd place.

COACHES CORNER

Commented Coach Halper, " It has been a rough couple of weeks for this team. Despite the circumstances, the team is focusing past these early season races and doing what is necessary to pull it together for the second half of the season." Said team mentor Al Halper, "There is a great deal of talent on this team and I look forward to this group being able to show their strengths as they get closer to conference. This is a team that will treat the present adversities with a positive spin."

Halper said further, "While a number of the guys are on the mend, those who have raced in the past few weeks have gained greatly from their racing experiences. This week, Devin Luce, our top finisher, raced with the top group of WPI and Assumption runners and stayed close throughout the 8k. He handled all the hills quite well and finished strong. Devin should have his best races ahead of him."

Halper went on to praise his other runners who competed, "Christian Vera ran a strong second half of the race after struggling some with the early hills. The trio of Christian Torres, Jack Newcomb, and John Shugrue worked together early the race and ran tough throughout as did sixth and seventh finishers Alex Dalelio and Omar Cordaro. Traditionally, we are a late season team and with next week's race putting us at the half-way point, we hope the team will start to see some breakthrough races over the next few weeks."

Next Saturday (Sep. 30), Worcester State University travels to the Community College of Rhode Island to take part in the school's annual invitational.
