Softball Falls To Trinity Twice To End Regular Season

Worcester, MA --- Trinity senior Abby Ostrom (Carlisle, MA) went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and six RBIs as she helped the Bantams take two from Worcester State in a 10-1 six inning victory and a 5-4 triumph in non-conference softball action today at Rockwood Park.

With the wins, Trinity ends their season at 14-17 overall while the Lancers fall to 11-20 with the setbacks.

Ostrom got the visitors started in the nightcap when she lifted a two-run homer to right centerfield for the early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first.

Senior Olivia Berry (Quincy, MA) tacked on another score in the top of the third for the 3-0 edge with an RBI single to drive in sophomore Erica Correia (Glen Rock, NJ).

The Bantams took over the 5-0 margin with single runs as freshman Sarah Reynolds (Moraga, CA) notched a run producing ground out in the fifth and sophomore Erica Quinones (Trumbull, CT) knocked in Ostrom in the sixth, who reached on a walk.

But the Lancers finally got to freshman starter Lily Jewell (Carlisle, MA), who tried to complete her third contest of the season.

With the bases loaded and one out, the hosts found holes in Trinity's defense as freshman Courtney Salisbury (Cranston, RI), junior Katie Storro (Leominster, MA), sophomore Marissa Avanzato (Pittsfield, MA) and classmate Hayley Terry (N. Dighton, MA) all notched RBIs to help make it a one-score contest.

Sophomore Hannah King (Kennebunk, ME), however, set down the final two batters with a swinging strikeout and a fielder's choice groundout to end the game.

Up until the seventh where she allowed six hits and four earned runs, Jewell (3-5) yielded three base-knocks, two walks and she fanned a pair of batters over her first six frames of work. King picked up her second stop of the campaign to preserve the win.

Freshman Kayla Humphrey (Wallingford, CT) was dealt the loss as her record dropped to 4-6 in the setback.

Storro and sophomore Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, MA) both notched two safeties each for the hosts.

The Bantams outhit the Lancers, 12-9 in the second contest.

In the opener, Ostrom snapped a scoreless game in the top of the third with a two-run single for the 2-0 contest.

Worcester State responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the same stanza. After Storro singled down the line, she advanced to second on the errant relay throw by the left fielder. She then later scored on a sacrifice fly by Salisbury to help the hosts cut the deficit in half.

Trinity though scored eight unanswered runs and took over a commanding 10-1 advantage in the top of the sixth. Correa and Berry underscored the fifth with run producing at-bats before Ostrom highlighted the sixth two-run double to help break open the game.

Salisbury and sophomore Meghan Rich (Chelmsford, MA) both reached with infield singles in the bottom of the sixth in an effort to try and get something going, but King stranded them both to secure the victory.

King (11-10) permitted one unearned run as she gave up five hits and walked one over her six innings of work.

Rich (6-7) was saddled with the loss. Rich gave up 10 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits to go with four strikeouts and she issued a pair of free passes.

Correa led the 14-hit attack for the Bantams with a 3-for-4 effort and two RBIs while Ostrom, Galese, and Reynolds all registered two base-knocks each.

Salisbury was the lone multi-hitter for the Lancers going 2-for-3.

Worcester State will compete again this Thursday in the opening round of the MASCAC Tournament. The third-seeded Blue and Gold host #6 Fitchburg State at 7 PM in a single elimination game with the winner playing second-seeded MCLA on Friday.
