CLERMONT, Fla. - The Worcester State University softball team continues to seek its first win of the season after falling twice on its Florida Spring Break trip Tuesday afternoon at Hancock Park. Worcester State opened the day by falling 8-0 to Stockton in five innings, before they were defeated by Becker by a final of 3-1.
With the losses, the Lancers fall to 0-6 overall on the season.
GAME 1 - Stockton 8, Worcester State 0 (5 innings)
A big first inning from Stockton was all the offense the Ospreys would need as Worcester State fell in five innings to open the day.
Junior Alexandra Cosenzo broke her school's all-time home run record in the bottom of the first inning, sending a three-run bomb over the wall in left center field to put the Ospreys up 4-0 early. Stockton would go on to score six runs in the inning.
Cosenzo had an RBI single in the second inning as well, as the Ospreys added some insurance with two runs in the inning.
Worcester State had no answer for Stockton pitcher Samantha Huetter on the afternoon, who got the win with a complete-game two-hitter with three strikeouts. The only Lancer threat came in the top of the second inning after base hits from Katie Polselli (Charlton, Mass.) and Ally Tocman (Shrewsbury, Mass.) loaded the bases with just one out, but they were left stranded. The hits from Polselli and Tocman were the only hits the Lancers managed in the loss.
Carly Zielinski (Monson, Mass.) took the loss for Worcester State on the rubber, allowing six earned runs on five hits in an inning and a third. Sophomore Liv Larson (Marlborough, Mass.) was stellar in relief, throwing 2.2 shutout innings and allowing just three hits.
GAME 2 - Becker 3, Worcester State 1
The Lancers hit the ball hard in game two against Becker, but strong Hawk defense kept Worcester State in check in a frustrating defeat.
Becker got on the board with single runs in the first and second innings to give pitcher Ashley Veillette some cushion to work with. The Lancers had at least one hit in every inning except the fifth in the ballgame, but could not come up with any timely hitting until it was too little, too late.
With her team trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, senior Monica Ferrazzani (North Reading, Mass.) doubled to deep left center to score Sarah Fahey (Auburn, Mass.) from second, but that was the only scoring the Lancers would get in the loss.
Freshman Molly Glynn (Abington, Mass.) took the loss allowing two earned runs in two innings pitched. In five innings of relief, senior Rachel Frisch (Worcester, Mass.) allowed just one earned on five hits with five strikeouts.
Worcester State will be off on Wednesday before continuing its Spring Break schedule on Thursday with a doubleheader against Wheaton (Ill.) and Carroll (Wis.) at Hancock Park.
