Softball Closes Weekend with Pair of Losses to UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Worcester State University softball team was on the wrong end of a pair of non-conference games against UMass Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon at the UMD Softball Complex. Worcester fell 8-1 in game one and 5-3 in game two.

With the losses, Worcester State drops to 3-21 on the season.

Game 1 - UMass Dartmouth 8, Worcester State 1

The Lancers drew first blood in the opening game of the afternoon, as Kaiulani Ennis (Swansea, Mass.) recorded an RBI single to bring home junior Samantha Stake (Worcester, Mass.). The hit, however, would prove to be only one of two for the Lancers in game one. A fifth inning infield single from Kristen Huston (Spencer, Mass.) was the only additional offense the Lancers would muster.

The Corsairs got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run double, and added on with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the contest out of reach.

Game 2 - UMass Dartmouth 5, Worcester State 3

The Corsairs took a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch before pitcher Carly Zielinski (Monson, Mass.) settled right in.

Zielinski retired 10 consecutive Corsair batters, setting the stage for Worcester State's comeback bid in the top of the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Stake and junior Ashley Lynch (Shrewsbury, Mass.) roped back-to-back RBI singles, scoring sophomores Ally Tocman (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Alyssa Monti (Marlborough, Mass.), and evening the score at 2-2.

UMass Dartmouth would respond in the bottom of the frame however, putting up three runs and regaining the lead.

Tocman led off the top of the seventh inning with triple and scored moments later on a wild pitch, but the Lancers could do no more damage to pull out the victory.

The Lancers will return to conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Fitchburg State for a pair of MASCAC games against the Falcons.
