Softball Drops Pair to Framingham

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - The Worcester State University softball team was on the short end of a pair of Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference matchups against Framingham State in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Maple Street Field. The Lancers (4-26, 3-5 MASCAC) fell 9-1 in six innings in game one and 8-0 in five innings in game two.

Game 1 - Framingham State 9, Worcester State 1

Framingham State took advantage of five extra base hits to claim game number one.

Trailing 4-0 in the top of the fourth, Worcester State scored its only run of the day, capitalizing on a throwing error by the shortstop to score Kaiulani Ennis (Swansea, Mass.). The Lancers had the bases loaded with just one away in the frame, but Framingham pitcher Kelsi Gunarathne worked out the jam to keep her team ahead by three.

Framingham scored three in the fourth inning and two in the sixth to secure the victory. Worcester State's Rachel Frisch (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss by allowing six earned on six hits in 3.1 innings pitched.

Game 2 - Framingham State 8, Worcester State 0

Game two had the appearance of a pitchers' duel in the early stages, but a seven-run Framingham fourth inning put the contest out of reach and gave the game its 8-0 final.

A lead-off single from junior Samantha Stake (Worcester, Mass.) was the game's only hit until the bottom of the third inning, when Ram third baseman Kirsten Dick sent a home run over the fence in left to make the score 1-0.

Worcester State pitcher Liv Larson (Marlborough, Mass.) retired the first two batters of the bottom of the fourth before Framingham's bats came alive. A bases-clearing double from Dick proved to be the back-breaker in the seven-run frame.

Larson was charged with the loss, allowing five earned on just three hits. The home run from Dick was the only hit and run she allowed through 3.2 innings pitched before Framingham's big two-out rally.

Worcester State will return to action with its Mental Health Awareness Games against Salem State on Monday at Raymond Diamond.
