Softball's Season Ends in MASCAC Elimination Game

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - The Worcester State University softball team saw its 2019 season draw to a close on Friday afternoon, as the Lancers suffered a 3-0 defeat to Fitchburg State in an elimination game in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

With the loss, Worcester State finishes its season with a record of 9-32. Fitchburg State moves into the conference semifinals, where it will face Framingham State on Saturday.

Fitchburg State got the only offense it would need in the bottom of the first inning, as Audrey Johnson recorded an RBI single to put the Falcons up 1-0. Fitchburg would add another on an RBI single from Olivia Pietersen to go ahead 2-0 in the third.

Worcester State mounted a threat in the top of the sixth inning, as juniors Samantha Stake (Worcester, Mass.) and Ashley Lynch (Shrewsbury, Mass.) reached base on back-to-back singles with one out. They advanced to second and third on a flyout, but were left stranded to end the threat.

Maddie Medina delivered some insurance for the Falcons in the bottom of the sixth with a run-scoring single to put her team ahead 3-0, which would hold up as the game's final score.

Worcester State senior Haley Scola (Worcester, Mass.) led the Lancers offensively with a pair of hits, including a seventh inning double, the only extra base hit of the game for either side.

Rachel Frisch (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss for the Lancers, allowing three earned runs and striking out four. Mikayla Harnois got the victory for Fitchburg with six strikeouts in the complete game.
