Worcester State 60, Framingham State 58
Framingham, MA --- The Worcester State College women’s
basketball team held off a late surge by the host Framingham State
Rams to pick up a 60-58 conference win this afternoon and remain
unbeaten in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference
(MASCAC) women’s basketball action. The Lancers improve to
9-6 overall and are now 3-0 in the MASCAC in a tie atop the
conference standings with Bridgewater State. The loss drops the
Rams to 5-7 overall and 0-3 in the MASCAC.
With Worcester State leading 51-37 with 5:35 remaining in the
game, the Rams rattled off an 11-4 run to pull within seven on a
three from freshman Megan Gangell (Lee, MA) with 1:15 left on the
clock.
After Worcester State hit one of two freebies, freshman Nicole
Meyer (North Attleboro, MA) nailed a three to pull the Rams within
five at 56-51 with 50.3 seconds remaining.
The Lancers Becca Giguere (West Brookfield, MA)
made 1-of-2 free throws to push the lead back to six. Senior
forward Toya Chester (Ayer, MA) nailed a jumper and freshman
forward Kia Minor (Oak Bluffs, MA) followed her own miss with a
lay-in to pull the Rams within two points with 15.4 left on the
clock.
Following a Rams foul, senior forward Bri
Flanders (Southampton, MA) hit two from the free throw
line giving the Lancers a 59-55. The Rams inbounded and pushed the
ball up the floor to junior Jill Johnson (Mansfield, MA) who banked
a three to pull the Rams within one with 6.2 seconds left in the
game.
Worcester State junior Kathleen Foley (Hudson,
NH) hit one of two giving the Lancers a two point lead with four
seconds remaining. The Rams grabbed the rebound on Foley’s
miss but were unable to get a shot off in the final seconds giving
the Lancers the two point win.
WSC had the early 27-17 advantage at the half and led by as many
as 15 points with 14:34 left (38-23) and 14 points seven minutes
later (49-35) before Framingham State mounted thier late
charge.
Worcester State sophomore Kaleigh Charette
(Fairhaven, MA) led the Lancers with a team-high 12 points on
4-of-8 from the floor. Freshman Meaghan
O’Keefe (Warren, MA) finished with 10 points and
four boards in 12 minutes off the bench, while Flanders finished
with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Giguere chipped in
nine points and eight assists.
The Rams were led by senior forward Toya Chester (Leominster, MA)
who picked up a game-high 13 points to go along with eight boards.
Minor was a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine
boards to go along with seven steals, while Johnson chipped in 11
points and five boards.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Salem State
for a 6 PM tip-off, while the Lancers travel to Fitchburg State for
a 5:30 PM game also on Tuesday.
